Maine Family Court Forms and Filing Resources

Maine publishes its own official family law forms, filing instructions, and self-help materials, but they are spread across several government sites. Maine's core family statutes live in the Maine Revised Statutes Title 19-A - Domestic Relations. Where it is live, divorce, custody, child support, and other family cases can be e-filed, and e-filing stays voluntary for most self-represented people. Emergency protection filings never require e-filing.

How the Maine court system handles family cases

Family cases in Maine are heard in the District Court, usually in the Family Division. Maine family cases are heard in the District Court's Family Division.

Maine organizes its trial courts by district rather than purely by county.

Maine's highest court is the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Maine has no middle appeals court - appeals go straight to the Supreme Judicial Court.

Besides the judge, a Magistrate / Commissioner may handle parts of a family case. Besides the judge, a magistrate, commissioner, or referee may hear temporary orders, child support, and uncontested matters - usually subject to a judge's review.
