Maryland publishes its own official family law forms, filing instructions, and self-help materials, but they are spread across several government sites. Maryland's core family statutes live in the Maryland Code Family Law. You need an email address and a credit or debit card to register. The courts also run an e-filing help line at 410-260-1114.
How the Maryland court system handles family cases
Family cases in Maryland are heard in the Circuit Court. Contested divorce and custody are heard in the Circuit Court (the District Court does not handle divorce).
Maryland has one Circuit Court per county (and Baltimore City) - 24 in all.
Appeals from a family case generally go first to the Appellate Court of Maryland, and the state's highest court is the Supreme Court of Maryland. Renamed in 2022 from the 'Court of Special Appeals'.
Besides the judge, a Family Magistrate may handle parts of a family case. Family Magistrates hear support, custody, and other matters and recommend orders to the judge.
Maryland renamed its top courts in 2022: the old 'Court of Appeals' is now the Supreme Court of Maryland.
