Florida publishes its own official family law forms, filing instructions, and self-help materials, but they are spread across several government sites. Florida's core family statutes live in the Florida Statutes Chapter 61 - Dissolution of Marriage. Divorce, custody, and other family cases can be started and filed entirely through the portal.
How the Florida court system handles family cases
Family cases in Florida are heard in the Circuit Court, usually in the Family Law Division. Divorce, custody, and support are filed in the Circuit Court's Family Law Division.
Florida's 67 counties are grouped into 20 judicial circuits; each circuit covers one or more counties.
Appeals from a family case generally go first to the District Court of Appeal, and the state's highest court is the Florida Supreme Court. Florida's middle appeals courts are called District Courts of Appeal (DCAs).
Besides the judge, a General Magistrate may handle parts of a family case. With the parties' consent, a General Magistrate can hear support, timesharing, and other issues and recommend an order.
Florida's middle appeals court is called a 'District Court of Appeal' - not to be confused with the trial-level Circuit Court.
